September 28, 1988
Although we 've never met, I 'm using the familiar salutation because, after reading your reflection in the summer 1988 issue of Restoration & Management Notes, I feel as though I know you; at least, we seem to share a worldview. This would not have been the case four years ago, for while I certainly "knew " about environmental problems, I never really "understood" them, at least not in the sense that you expressed so well.
The purposes of this letter are to thank you for writing your reflection, to share these ideas [omitted here], and, most importantly, to solicit your wisdom on what to do.
Thanks again for your inspiration. With best regards,
